Junior RHP Mike Hamann was selected in the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft for the second time on Wednesday in the 16th round (494th overall pick) by the Chicago Cubs. Hamann was also drafted in the 24th round (725th overall pick) by the Cleveland Indians in 2009 but chose to enroll at the University of Toledo. The Port Clinton, OH native is one of 38 Rockets to be drafted on 43 occasions since the 1965 inception of the MLB Draft and the ninth student-athlete to be selected under Head Coach Cory Mee a total of 11 times.
A three-year member of the weekend rotation for the 2012 Mid-American Conference West Division champion Rockets, Hamann sported a 3-5 record with a 5.80 ERA in a team-high 14 games this spring. Picked as the fourth-best MAC prospect for the 2012 MLB Draft by Baseball America, Hamann surrendered 62 runs (49 earned) on 89 hits with 55 strikeouts in 76.0 innings of work. The 2009 second-team All-MAC honoree finished first on the squad in games started, second in punchouts, third in opponent batting average (.289) and innings pitched and tied for third in wins.
Hamann worked at least 7.0 innings in four starts this spring and on 13 occasions in his three-year collegiate career for the Midnight Blue & Gold. He currently sits eighth in UT annals in career fewest walks per inning (.294, minimum 100.0 frames).
