TOLEDO, Ohio -
One Toledo dad almost missed out on the birth of his son because his job keeps him out of town. But it's not your usual job
Johnathan Guerreo was told he'd be traveling for work in January and that he'd be back in several months. He also knew that his fiancé would be giving birth to his son in June. So naturally he would ask for time off but his line of work isn't easy to get away from.
That's because Sergeant Johnathan Guerrero is on a temporary leave from Afghanistan.
He did get to witness the birth of Johnathan Guerrero junior born on Tuesday. He came in 8 pounds 14 ounces and measured at 21.5 ounces.
"I didn't think I was going to be there at all," said Sgt. Guerrero.
But after getting the word from the Army two weeks ago, he made it with three days to spare.
"I was excited, I told everyone. I told her and she was happy and I was very happy. Ii was happy I just made it," said Sgt. Guerrero.
She is his fiancé Alexandria Hennessey and boy was she glad she had her soldier as she soldiered through 15-16 hours of labor.
"I was really excited. I definitely could not have gotten through it without him because it was hard. He's been a lot of support. He hasn't left my side at all one time," said Hennessey, Sgt. Guerrero's fiancé.
Sgt. Guerrero is part of the Alpha Company, 1-148th Infantry. He's serving on a base in northern Afghanistan. It's been hard the last few months worried about his safety and his family at home.
"Just worrying about what's going to happen to you over there and worrying to what's happening over here to who we love. It's a lot of headache, but I'm just glad that I'm home now. I got to see my son," said Guerrero.
"It's really tough on him when he's over there. and I know it's gonna be hard when he leaves from the baby now. I'm just really worried about him mostly," said Hennessey.
As the family reflects on its new life and what's to come, a trip back to Afghanistan is waiting for him next week.
"It's hard saying goodbye when I have to leave for a week or two or however long for my daughter, but now I have to leave my son and I gotta leave my fiancé again. It's hard," said Guerrero.
He's learned a lot in Afghanistan, which apparently also included some diplomacy.
"He looks a lot like both us of. There are times when he makes faces he looks more like me, but I think he looks just like both of us," said Guerrero.
His deployment is supposed to end in either mid-August or mid-September.
