Davis-Besse returns to service after refueling

Posted: Updated:
AKRON, Ohio -

FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company announced its Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station in Oak Harbor, Ohio, returned to service early today following a May 6, 2012, shutdown for refueling and maintenance.

During the outage, 68 of Davis-Besse's 177 fuel assemblies were exchanged and numerous safety inspections, including inspections of the station's steam generators, were successfully conducted. Preventative maintenance and improvement projects also were completed that are designed to promote continued safe and reliable operations.

In addition, inspections of the station's Shield Building revealed that the tight cracks in the building's wall discovered during the fall 2011 reactor head replacement outage do not appear to have grown, nor were new cracks identified. The Shield Building continues to perform its function safely and reliably.
