BOWLING GREEN – Summer has not yet officially begun, but Bowling Green State University's Anthony Grant has already enjoyed a great deal of success for his summer team. Grant is playing for the Michigan Bucks of the Premier Development League, and has helped the team to unprecedented heights.
Grant, who will be a junior on BGSU head coach Eric Nichols' team this fall, played a key role as the Bucks advanced to the fourth round in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.
The Bucks, an amateur team, began cup play with a 6-0 win over the Jersey Shore Boca on May 16, then went on the road to upset a professional team, with a 4-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on May 22.
Then, in the third round, the Bucks upset the Chicago Fire of Major League Soccer, 3-2 in overtime, before a sellout crowd in Pontiac, Mich. The Bucks' run finally came to an end in the fourth round, as the Dayton Dutch Lions, a professional team (D3 Pro) converted an overtime penalty kick in a 2-1 win. Grant scored the Bucks' lone goal, coming on as a substitute at the start of the second half and burying a shot in the 55th minute.
Meanwhile, the Bucks have opened the PDL schedule with a 4-0-1 record, and Grant scored four goals over his first two PDL matches. Grant had two goals and an assist in a 5-0 win over the Hamilton FC Rage in the Canton (Mich.) Cup Memorial Day event (May 26). The Kingston, Jamaica native had his second brace of the young season, scoring twice within a six-minute span in a 4-2 road win over the Cincinnati Kings (June 1). For his efforts, Grant was named the Man of the Match.
In all, Grant has nine points in four PDL matches played, with four goals and an assist. He leads the team in points despite ranking 10th on the team in minutes played (254) in league matches. Those stats do not include his goal in the fourth-round US Open Cup match vs. the Dutch Lions.
On Thursday (June 7), Grant earned honorable mention on the PDL's Team of the Week, no small feat considering there are over 70 teams in the league.
The Bucks are next in action on Tuesday (June 12), with a road match against the Chicago Inferno. The team returns home on Friday (June 15) to begin a three-match homestand against Forest City London.
