New Cancer Center Coming at UTMC

Posted: Updated:

Major news out of the University of Toledo. 13abc has learned the University of Toledo Medical Center is building a new multi-million dollar cancer center. The 7-and-a-half million dollar facility is expected to open in January. 13abc has obtained exclusive first pictures of what it will look like, and how doctors say it will improve patient care.

The new Dana Cancer Center will transform what's now a conference center into a new hub for cancer treatment. Doctors say it will centralize cancer diagnosis and treatment. Chemotherapy, radiation and surgery will all be here at the new cancer center increasing convenience for patients.

"Oftentimes this can be done in a one-stop sort of an event, rather than having to go perhaps to three different appointments to see three different groups of specialists," says Dr. John Feldmeier, who is Chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology. The doctor says the new center is designed to improve patient care... and comfort.

"Some of them have mobility issues: wheelchair or crutches and we're going to have a nice drive-through right under the overhang for the Dana Cancer Center and valet parking as well."

The doctor says the Dana Cancer Center will also feature innovative technology. They'll use a new PET CT-scanner and standard CT images to better target tumors. They'll also have a linear accelerator, giving experts better aim at tumors and possibly faster treatment.

"Oftentimes a single treatment or maybe four or five treatments, whereas it replaces a course of therapy that might be six to eight weeks previously," says Dr. Feldmeier.

Since the Dana Center is built into the side of a hill there is already natural shielding for radiation treatments.

"Doors on our machine right now are full of lead bricks and they weigh 18 thousand pounds."

Dr. Feldmeier says UTMC is an academic institution and cancer research happens right here, and that's something that may help guide future treatment.

"Very happy about the beauty, the accessibility and the multidisciplinary nature of the cancer center, which is going to move our patient care forward."

Since the nearby Hilton Hotel often uses the Dana Conference Center for events, the University says its agreed to build the hotel a new conference center.
