FLINT, Mich. (AP) - An aunt says a combat engineer from Flint who was killed in an insurgent attack in Afghanistan volunteered for his latest deployment.
Martha Alexander says 25-year-old Sgt. Joseph Lilly "loved being a U.S. Army soldier."
The Pentagon says Lilly was injured June 12 in an attack in Kandahar province and died two days later.
Alexander said Monday her nephew was hit by a sniper's bullet only weeks before his death, sustaining a flesh wound that required a few stitches on his chin. She says Lilly "was just upset that he was sidelined."
Lilly was a Carman-Ainsworth High School graduate and also served in Iraq. He's survived by a wife and 3-year-old son.
His aunt says Lilly's body was flown to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware over the weekend.
