Methane leak has residents in a bind

Posted: Updated:

A methane leak in West Toledo has several homeowners fed up.

"It is a royal inconvenience and I think we have reached the point where we are frustrated with the entire issue and nobody seems to know how to remedy it"

Connie Kuyoth hasn't had gas in her home for 19 days.

"I boil water in the microwave to clean up which is a pain because one weekend I had three grand kids here with me so it really was a pain getting hot water for them."

Last month Columbia Gas shut off service to all 13 homes in a West Toledo subdivision on Oakside drive off of Bancroft.

A spokes person for the gas company says they found dangerous levels of methane gas. Gas he says isn't coming from a Columbia Gas pipeline.

"Our goal responsibility to deliver natural gas to point a to point b in a safe manner and if it's not safe we won't do that's," said Chris Kozak.

The burning question who's responsible and liable for the problem?  Nobody knows!  Homeowners say the gas company took readings, but frustrated homeowners say they can't get a straight answer.

"Those of us who were home during the day kind of followed them around with the builder and if you asked anything specific they would say if you ask one more question like that we will leave"

Kuyoth says the gas company even dug little holes looking for answers

" We put a match over the area and we didn't even get a poof so I don't know what this all means"

Gas officials admit there's no quick fix.

"In terms of remediation we asked some sort of government entity to step in and say a system has been put in place and under our expertise that system is safe now makes those home safe for natural gas service"

Until that happens it appears Kuyoth will have to do without service

"I don't know what's going to happen"
