Enriching the lives of adults with disabilities

Posted: Updated:

Enriching the lives of adults with developmental disabilities. Just because someone has some limitations doesn't mean life can't be full and rewarding. 13abc's Susan Ross Wells saw for herself the other day when she paid a visit to Josina Lott Residential and Community Services.

It was planting day at Josina Lott the day we visited. Residents were digging up the dirt in a special raised garden bed. The height of the planter makes it easier for residents to care for the plants and flowers. Josina Lott Executive Director Michael Malone says they'll harvest the herbs and then they'll be used as part of meal preparation.

32 people live at Josina Lott. Many are involved in a day program at a second site in Sylvania. The River Crossings facility features arts and crafts, and even a job program for some.

There are also all kinds of outdoor life enrichment activities. Residents not only help care for garden areas, but also help keep bird feeders full. A walking path that loops around the beautiful setting encourages residents to get out for some exercise.

"They're walking the pathway they're sitting at the picnic table," says Malone. "Or they're just relaxing in the swing."

This Saturday will be anything but relaxing, as Josina Lott hosts it's 11th annual Lawn Games. It is an awareness event open to the community featuring some fun games, a big family-style picnic and great entertainment. There are always lots of smiles, laughs and hugs at Lawn Games.

"An enriched life. That's what we're trying to do is enrich their lives and make things a little bit better. A little bit easier as life goes on and I think they enjoy living here."

New and exciting for Lawn Games this year is a 5k run. They're encouraging runners to come out and get involved. Registration is at 7:30 a.m. and the race starts at 8:30 a.m. Lawn Games start at 9:30.
