Kilpatrick visit to Toledo church sparks controversy

Posted: Updated:

This is the exclusive video of Kwame Kilpatrick's visit to the Worship Center. The congregation gave him a standing ovation and it sparked heated comments on the radio Monday.

Kilpatrick tells 13abc, "What happened is I had an affair and lied about it, and all the fallout afterwards." That's the message behind Kwame Kilpatricks book.

Four years ago the former mayor of Detroit was charged with perjury and resigned during a text message scandal.

He went to jail, lied under oath and is now accused of not using his assets to pay restitution to Detroit

Kilpatrick's extortion and a corruption trial is set for the fall.

So is this someone who should be speaking in a church pulpit?

Dr. Pat McKinstry is the Pastor of the Worship Center.

She tells 13abc, "He who be without sin, cast the first stone."

Dr. McKinstry says she invited Kilpatrick to encourage the people in her congregation.

She tells 13ABC, "They don't need to come to church and feel there is no hope for them and I thought who would be better than someone who has been there, to still tell them there is yet hope and another chance."

Today Fred Lefebvre expressed outrage on News talk 1370 WSPD.

He sent this statement to 13Abc: "I'm surprised that a local church would invite Kilpatrick to speak and sign copies of his book for their congregation. Mr. Kilpatrick's history of abuse of taxpayer funds in Detroit is well documented and clouds still linger on what happened in that administration. I believe there are better examples of politicians for young people to look up and follow."

Dr. Pat McKinstry tells 13abc, "The penal system is called rehabilitation and correction, so if they are in there and come out, we need to know has there been a change...and its people like that can reach more than I can."
