Sylvania trustees discuss opting out of TARTA

Posted: Updated:
SYLVANIA, Ohio -

Perrysburg was first. Now Sylvania Township could be next in line to put the brakes on TARTA.

At Tuesday's meeting, Sylvania Township Trustees voted to put an "opt out of TARTA" measure on the November ballot. Township trustees were going to put the issue on the ballot last year, but pulled it back in order to give itself more time to look into the issue. But here's the difference between then and now, there are no plans to have an alternative to TARTA in place, if voters opt out.

"There is a transportation plan, it's just not public," Township Trustee John Jennewine said. "Its a private transportation, there is Black and White Cab in the community and TLC transportation."

Now the fate of public transportation in the township is up to the voters.  Some trustees say they want the people to decide whether they even want public transportation.

One trustee didn't vote.  Kevin Haddad says had they stayed on track the first time around, the Township would have a new plan in the works for a third of TARTA's price.

"That would take care of exactly what we need in transportation cost for the whole township," he said.

Those supporting the opt-out believe the township pays too much for the service it gets. But some say it's a needed service and they doubt the township can provide a better service cheaper. Of course Perrysburg voters opted out of TARTA last year. It's now trying to come up with its own public transportation plan.
