ODOT considers naming rights on highways

Posted: Updated:

You've heard the question "what's in a name?" The answer for the Ohio Department of Transportation could be thousands of dollars.

ODOT wants Ohio to become the first state in the country to sell road and bridge naming rights and to commercialize rest stops.

It's one way of addressing a $1.6 billion transportation funding shortfall. Selling naming rights to interchanges and even rest stop toilets and snack machines could produce as much as $27 million a year.

"Ohio has the 4th largest interstate system in the country," says Steve Faulkner with ODOT. "We have more bridges than any other state in the nation."

ODOT says it wants to hear from individuals and business willing to invest in the naming rights idea by next month.
