Tree falls, knocks out power on Lockwood - 13abc.com Toledo (OH) News, Weather and Sports

The storm that rolled through Thursday evening wasn't major, but it caused quite a bit of damage on one Toledo block. 

Heavy wind took down a tree on Lockwood, blocking the street to traffic and leaving in its path a spider web of power lines.

"It happened to just be a strong gust of wind, tree cracked, hit the power lines, heard a big boom and hit the ground," says Bob Urbina who lives on Lockwood.

The fall knocked out power to every home on the block between Berdan and Sylvania.  The whole scene was a surprise for Joanne Eckles as she got home from dinner.

"There's a tree, I don't know if it's in my yard or next door because of the tape," says Eckles.

Several neighbors spent the evening outside drinking cold beer before it got warm, turning the tree tumble into a block party.

"We're out here just relaxing, everybody is out, luckily it is nice and cool so we don't have to worry about sitting in the house," says Urbina.

A lot of the neighbors say the trees on this block are the problem. They're pretty old and not very sturdy.

"They just cut one down. The city came in and cut one down," says Urbina.  "There's even one right behind us here, that one's dead. A lot of these trees are in the same realm, they need to be taken out."

For now Toledo Edison and chainsaw crews are focused on clearing away this one tree and safely restoring power.

"Luckily nobody really got hurt," says Urbina.
