Toledo City Council receiving some rather good news this week. Finance officials presented city council with the latest figures on tax collection.
The City of Toledo is seeing a $2.7 million boost in tax revenue. Officials say Toledo is on the right track with the city's tax revenue growth exceeding this year's budget by 3 percent.
Councilman George Sarantou says things are slowly getting better here in the city of Toledo.
People are going back to work. It's not happening as fast as they would like, but's it's clear that the unemployment numbers are dropping.
"We're now to about 7.8 percent in the city, but clearly the manufacturing sector is leading us out of this deep recession, Jeep specifically the GM power plant. We are in no means out of the woods, we still have a very deep recession, however the trend is still very positive in Toledo and we're doing much better than most other cities in America," says Sarantou.
Officials reported that all departments including police and fire departments were well under their overtime budgets. Sarantou believes the city should add more officers and fire fighters.
"That is the crux of our obligation to the citizens. Public safety is number one," says Sarantou.
The casino now employees about 1,300 people, the numbers that we're released in this latest report don't take into consideration the casino's grand opening in May.
"The casino employing that many people will have a very positive effect on our income tax and the other important thing is over a quarter of a million people have now visited the casinos since it's opened which is very much beyond the casinos expectations."
Next months report will show activity through June which takes into effect the casino in regards to hiring.
Officials say they expect those numbers to be higher than last years..
