Bowling Green State University Cross Country Coach Lou Snelling has announced the 2012 schedule for the BGSU men's and women's cross country team. The Falcons will compete four times prior to the MAC Championships, including a home meet to start the year.
Bowling Green will host the Mel Brodt Collegiate Opener on Aug. 31 with both Toledo and Eastern Michigan in attendance. After a one-year hiatus from hosting a meet, Falcon fans will have an opportunity to see the team compete at home.
"It was important to get this meet back on the schedule," Snelling said. "We're excited about it and it's a great opportunity to compete on our home course, especially as we host the MAC Championships in another year."
The Falcons will then head to the Buffalo Stampede Invitational on Sept. 15, as a preview for the MAC Championships, also held at Buffalo on Oct. 27.
"The idea is to get familiar with the course so that we know what to expect when we get back out there for the MAC Championships," Snelling said.
Bowling Green will then compete in the All-Ohio Championships at Cedarville on Sept. 29 and at the Bradley Classic on Oct. 12.
"This schedule is what we need as a team right now," Snelling said. "On the women's side, 10 of our 16 runners are freshmen or redshirt freshmen and we have to account for that. This schedule is designed to prepare us for the end of the year, which is where our major goals revolve around. It is a good mix in terms of level of competitiveness, field sizes, and courses to help us get to where we want to go. For the men, it is an opportunity to face some great competition and to be prepared for the end of the year. On both sides, we want to get better as the season progresses as our main focus is to be ready for the MAC Championships and the NCAA Regionals."
Snelling begins his second year as the head coach for the men's and women's cross country programs, as well as for the women's track and field program.
