Teens arrested after S. Toledo riot

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

A riot lands several teens in jail. Police were called out to Geneva and Nelson in South Toledo for a large group of kids fighting and breaking Toledo's curfew law. Several teens were arrested.

The riot happened right in front of Beverly Graves' home. Graves says she saw at least six police cars and a paddy wagon.

"I was glad to see them hauled away last night, I really was. Maybe a night downtown in jail will do them a world of good," Graves said.

Neighbor Larry Schultz said, "The parents should be held responsible. When my kids were growing up we had to be in at dark. We didn't allow our kids to be out at one or two o'clock in the morning."

Officers were called to Geneva and Nelson several times Tuesday on a large group of kids fighting and breaking curfew.  According to a police report, two adults were arrested and booked at the jail for disorderly conduct. Seven juveniles were also arrested for disorderly conduct and curfew violations.

According to Toledo's curfew law, if you are under the age of 11, you must be in the house by 10:00 p.m.  Kids ages 11 –15 must be home by 11:00 p.m. and if you are 16 or 17 years old, you have until midnight.

TPD Sgt. Joe Heffernan said, "Parents should enforce that. If they don't, not only can the child be charged for being out past curfew, but the parents can be charged also."

Schutlz says residents involved in the neighborhood association used to patrol the neighborhood on bikes.

"Like last night, all these kids in the street. We figure it's too dangerous. We'll just call the police."

The Arlington neighborhood has seen so many problems, some residents pitch in five bucks a month to have a security company patrol their streets.

Graves hopes what happened last night won't happen again.

"However, you can't have this going on all the time. I tell you one thing they're not going to scare me out of here because this is my home. I intend to stay"
