The Area Office on Aging of Northwestern Ohio wants to remind the community that extreme heat and humidity pose health risks for older adults, especially those with chronic conditions.

Today's hot weather does pose a risk to your health, and we're not just talking about sunburns. Heat can cause a number of health problems to people of any age. Today's possible triple-digit temperatures are perfect conditions for heat related illnesses.

Those dangers include heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, and even rashes. Those issues can cause serious problems to your body.

There are thing you can do to keep yourself safe: Medical experts say the first thing to do is make sure you're drinking plenty of fluids; that's even if you're not working or playing outside. The hot weather will drain your body of fluids, so don't wait until you're thirsty to drink.

Secondly, schedule you're outdoor activities carefully. If you can, stay inside during the hottest part of the day. If you need to go out do it in the morning or the evening. Don't leave children or pets in cars. Temperatures inside vehicles can rise 20 degrees in just 10 minutes. You also want to keep an especially close eye on children and older adults; they're especially susceptible to heat related illnesses.
