Check in on elderly during heat says TPD

TOLEDO, Ohio -

Toledo Police Officers are urging people to check on elderly neighbors during this heat wave.

Thursday, TPD's Retired Senior Volunteer Program hit the streets to check on seniors. The volunteers brighten the lives of many people while checking on their safety.

Sixty-two-year-old Peter Straube is a member of the volunteer patrol. They check on shut-ins and people who don't have family.

Straube says, "A lot of folks don't have cooling fans or they don't like to turn them on or they don't like to have the air on so it's a good way for us to check on them check on their safety."

Doctors say seniors are more prone to heat stress than younger people.

Toledo senior citizen Carol was excited to see the volunteers. She says her daughter signed her up for program.

"They're just wonderful. I just love them to pieces. They're the best people you could ever have come visit you."

The volunteers had eight people on their route Thursday.  They carry their client's medical history and a list of cooling centers for seniors

Marilyn Haines from RSVP says, "It lists the person's name, if they have any medical conditions that we should look for and we always fill out the form every week we visit them. We look at their living environment to make sure that's all right."

The volunteers know they can't check on everyone. That's why they urge you to check on your neighbors.
