State plans tougher high school tests

Posted: Updated:

Changes are on the way for Ohio high school students as the state plans to start a new method of testing before graduation. State leaders say the Ohio Graduation Test isn't making the cut, and within two years they want to change how high school students are evaluated before receiving a diploma. Bottom line, state education leaders want a harder test.

Multiple studies show the Ohio Graduation Test isn't measuring if a student is college ready. The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that leaders across the state are still trying to decide which type of testing will work best. One option is replacing the OGT with the ACT or requiring end of the course exams for each subject.

The current test measures if high school grads can function at a 10th grade level, which leaders say isn't high enough.

Students can expect to see something that focuses on each year of high school. If they don't pass, senior year will include reviews; so essentially students are ready for college.

The new exams wouldn't take place until the 2014-2015 school year. But students could see some example questions and tests starting as early as next month.
