TOLEDO, Ohio -
Doctors see it all this time of year. As we're out enjoying summer fun they say we need to use our heads when it comes to safety. Summer is trauma season and that keeps doctors busy in area emergency rooms.
"Lotta broken bones, arms, legs, ankles... that kinda thing and some head injuries," says Dr. Tim Zwayer, an emergency room physician at ProMedica Toledo Hospital.
He says you need to be mindful of motorcyclists out on the roads and make sure you and the kids have your helmets on for bike rides, rollerblading and other outdoor activities. If you're out with the family playing in the park or backyard watch out for that plant with three leaves.
"There's quite a bit of poison ivy going around. Biggest thing is just try to avoid it. If you do get it, try to not itch it and spread it even further," says Dr. Zwayer.
He says there's also some stomach upset out there right now.
"An increase in gastrointestinal bugs, a lot of vomiting and diarrhea, so be extra cautious washing your hands, watch out for any food that may have been sitting out, especially in this heat," he says.
Dr. Zwayer says that stomach bug can sometimes come with a low-grade fever and its usually viral.
"Usually runs its course as long as people can stay hydrated and keep up on the fluids. Give it some time to pass. Usually it's pretty self-limiting."
As for the poison ivy, the doctor says if the rash becomes increasingly red, there's drainage to it, or it spreads to the face or around the eyes, you should probably get in to see the doctor.
