While we've had pop up showers and damaging rain storms here in the Toledo area, it's a much different story just west of here. Lack of rain is killing entire crops in our region.
Corn crops are taking a beating because of record high temperatures.
30 percent of US crops are in "poor or very poor" conditions.
What's happening out in the fields is effecting items in the grocery store from dairy, to beef, to chicken and that's not all.
Corn Syrup can be found in most processed sweets, from soda to cookies to jam. Joni Meyer Crothers knows a thing or two about being a savvy grocery shopper. She's appeared several times on TLC'S Extreme Couponing.
With corn prices expected to jump 37 percent, she says if you're not into couponing, you may want to give it a try.
Joni Meyer Crothers tells 13abc, "To me that's just being a smart shopper and then you have extra money whether it be to pay on other bills or to go on vacation but while everyone else is struggling if you are couponing you have a lot of extra money that you didn't have before so its smart to start couponing now."
Joni suggests stocking up on chicken while it is on sale now before prices get even higher.
"You can get it under 2 dollars a pound you can freeze chicken up to a year so why not get a year's worth of chicken and freeze it and put it into family sizes what you think your family is going to use."
If your family includes a pet, know that Fido's food is expected to go up too.
Pet food often contains corn as one of its primary ingredients.
