SeaWorld fights killer whale contact rule

Posted: Updated:
ORLANDO, Florida -

The Orlando Sentinel says SeaWorld is appealing a federal ruling that says its animal trainers cannot have contact with killer whales during live performances, unless the whales are protected by physical barriers.

That ruling came after a SeaWorld trainer was killed in 2010.  Dawn Brancheau was held underwater by the six-ton whale named Tilikum.

SeaWorld has filed a petition for a federal review.  If the petition is not granted, the ruling will become final next Monday.
