The University of Toledo opened a new Barnes and Noble bookstore on Dorr and Secor Wednesday. It's part of the first phase of the university's Gateway Project.
The university hopes it will enhance life for students and also spur other private investors and developers to invest in the area and nearby homeowners to take pride in their properties.
The Barnes and Noble now sits where an old BP gas station once stood. In 2008 it was a crime scene after a clerk was shot and killed during a robbery
Bengals quarterback and 13abc's sports commentator Bruce Gradkowski is investing here too. The former UT football player will open Gradkowski's Sports Grille.
Other businesses include Great Clips, Jimmy Johns and Yogurt U.
UT officials say this bookstore is just the first step in a new chapter for the Dorr Street Corridor and safety remains their number one priority.
Deputy Chief of Police Rodney Theis says, "We will have officers on bike patrol, foot patrol, vehicle patrol we have officers assigned various times of the day to provide a presence just for the Gateway Project. "
