CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - A New Hampshire hospital
says a former lab technician accused of contaminating syringes that led
to at least 30 cases of hepatitis C had undergone drug testing and
criminal background checks before being hired.
Thirty-three-year-old David
Kwiatkowski was arrested Thursday in a Massachusetts hospital where he
was being treated and was charged with fraudulently obtaining drugs and
tampering with a consumer product.
He's accused of stealing
anesthetic drugs from the Exeter Hospital's cardiac catheterization lab,
refilling the used syringes with another liquid, and then returning
them to the lab to be used on patients.
U.S. Attorney John Kacavas
called Kwiatkowski a "serial infector" who worked in at least six other
states and is suspected of a similar drug diversion incident elsewhere.
He declined to name the other states.
