Jane Doe 1982 identified after 30 years

Posted: Updated:

Human remains found in Monroe 30 years ago have now been identified.

Police say they are the remains of 21-year-old Kimberly Wuerthele. And say they are investigating this as a homicide.

Kimberly was from Portage, Indiana and she went missing back in 1982. Family says Kimberly jumped from the car in Chicago while the family was trying to get her help from an addiction problem and they never heard from her again.

Detective Corporal Janis Regnier in Portage began looking into the case in 2008 in hopes of finding new leads. Using dental records and a new DNA database of unidentified remains at the University of North Texas Kimberly Wuerthele was identified.

Wuerthele's body washed ashore on Lake Erie at the Detroit Edison property on Front Street in Monroe, Michigan. At the time an autopsy ruled her death a homicide but she remained "Monroe County Jane Doe 1982" until Detective Regnier made the connection.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office is actively pursuing this homicide investigation. Anyone with information about the disappearance or murder are asked to cal the Detective Bureau, (734) 240-7530.
