Gage Hankins is expected to be okay which is more than a relief for the people in the small community of Forest, Ohio. Still, family and friends say the news was unsettling.
Family friend Becky Taylor says, "Its been a little crazy especially from a small town but it can happen anywhere."
One of their own, 18-year-old Gage Hankins, was injured in the massacre that left a dozen dead, and several more injured.
Gage's cousin, Patrick Massara said he heard from him right after the shooting.
"My brother and I were going into a showing in Findlay, just got out of it on our way home and we get a call from Gage."
At that point Massara says he was concerned. Because of the time difference between Colorado and Ohio, Gage should have been right in the middle of the movie.
"Put it on speaker wondering what is going on and he said you'll never guess what happened, I've been shot."
Gage, his brother, and a group of friends were watching the movie in theatre eight. The gunman was right next door.
Massara says, "A lot of the people thought it was sound effects they weren't sure, extra sound effects from the movie."
He says bullets and tear gas started coming through the wall and Gage was hit in his forearm.
"I don't think he fully understood what happened until he was in the hospital and his parents showed up and he started seeing it on the news this morning."
Luckily, he's already out of the hospital, recovering with his family in Colorado.
Still, many are having a hard time making sense of it all, especially after learning how bad it was.
Becky Taylor says, "It was a complete shock very grateful to know he was ok right off the bat but just kind of dumbfounded."
And Gage's cousin Patrick Massara wonders, "If the one guy would have gone in one theatre over who knows what would have happened with him."
Gage and his family will be in Colorado until Sunday. Family and friends we talked to today say they seem to be holding up pretty well considering the circumstances.
