Push for law to require US made Olympic uniforms

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

More response tonight from US Senators over a flap about the US Olympic team's uniforms for the opening ceremonies.

Lawmakers are asking for a gathering to showcase American equipment and apparel makers interested in outfitting future Olympic teams.

Senators are also pursuing legislation that would require US Olympians to wear US-made uniforms, an issue some say is a matter of pride and good economic policy.

Among those,  Ohio's Senator Sherrod Brown.

"It's not just outfitting them in American-made clothes. I think the attention drawn to this and the outreach we've done to a lot of clothing manufacturers is going to mean more clothes are going to be made in America.  My guess is there's no US Olympic Committee in the future that's going to be dumb enough to go through this again, so we'll continue to work with them."

The US uniforms for the 2012 London games were made in China, which sparked an outcry from members of Congress.

Designer Ralph Lauren said last week the uniforms it provides the US Olympic Team at the 2014 Winter Games will be made in the United States.
