NHTSA: Traffic deaths soar in first part of 2012

The number of deadly car crashes is up.

They soared more than 13 percent in the first quarter of the year, compared to the same time last year.

That's according to preliminary numbers.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates more than 7,600 people died in motor vehicle crashes in the first three months of this year. Nearly 1,000 more than the same period in 2011.

If the estimate holds true, it would be the second biggest year-to-year quarterly increase since the government began recording traffic fatalities in 1975.
