Ohio investigating TPS attendance records

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

Toledo Public Schools is under investigation by the Ohio Department of Education after the district changed attendance records to improve state report card scores.

TPS Superintendent Dr. Jerome Pecko said schools withdrew and re-enrolled students who are chronically absent to erase poor attendance records.

When news reports came out about a Columbus school district doing the same thing, Dr. Pecko started asking for more information about the law, which the district calls vague.

"We've said that we want to investigate this. We've hired the attorneys. We want to look at this, because we want to be within the guidelines of the Ohio Department of Education," says TPS School Board President Lisa Sobecki. "We do not want to jeopardize our school district."

The Ohio Department of Education says school districts are required to report timely and accurate data.
