DEP: Lake Erie fish kill cause a natural phenomena
ERIE, Pa. (AP) - Pennsylvania environmental officials say a natural water temperature phenomenon is to blame for the deaths of hundreds of fish that washed up on the shores of Lake Erie.
The Department of Environmental Protection says the die-off of freshwater drum is a result of winds pushing the lake's surface waters west and cold water welling up from the bottom.
The dead fish were spotted near the Pennsylvania-New York line and on the Ohio shore.
DEP spokesman Kevin Sunday tells the Erie Times-News (http://bit.ly/MWpi9E ) the fish would've have died as a result of the temperature change.
