Oregon schools budget concerns

Posted: Updated:

Oregon City Schools are facing some uncertain times.  Much like other school districts, money is running out and expenses continue to increase.  Superintendent MIike Zalar says state tax reform, a decline in area property values, and the current economic conditions have really hit the district.  And even thought, they've taken some preventative measures, more still needs to be done.

"Its been kind of a perfect storm," he said.

At a meeting on Wednesday night, dozens of teachers and members of the community came together to try and figure out what can be done to bridge the gap.  Though there was no official levy talk, its still a possibility.

Zalar said, "we don't have a lot of good options in schools this is one of the few areas where people have a say in how they want to fund their schools."

The most recent levy attempt was in 2008 and voters shot it down. But now, some think it could be the way to go, if the community gets on board.

Jamie Campbell, an Oregon parent said, "I would support a levy my kids are in the district and I'm firm in backing them so yes I would support a levy."

Nothing is a done deal yet.  But to help with the budget concerns, Superintendent Zalar took a voluntary pay cut and won't get a raise for the rest of his contract.
