A Northwest Ohio man is displaying his own tribute to veterans in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Steven Gore grew up in a military family and has been carving for 15 years. Three years ago, he was badly beaten by two teenagers, armed with a metal baseball bat and tire iron. His recovery has been long and hard, but a group of Ohio veterans helped him through it. To show his appreciation, Gore spent nearly 600 hours carving a sculpture out of locust wood. The tribute to military members will be raffled off to help the Wounded Warrior Project.
"They told me I'd never carve again, I do. They told me I'd never rank again, I'm ranked eighth in the world. And they told me I couldn't raise a million dollars with a saw they shouldn't have done that, because now I have to," says Gore.
Gore plans to show off his skills and carve at a park in Grand Rapids, Michigan. A portion of proceeds from those carvings will go to a family in need.
