Boy sickened in E. coli outbreak out of hospital

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) - A 14-year-old boy seriously sickened in an E. coli outbreak after a southwest Ohio picnic has been released from the hospital.

The boy was 1 of 3 people in serious condition with complications from infection by the bacteria. A 73-year-old man who was hospitalized died earlier this week.

The Dayton Daily News reports that public health officials say a 4-year-old girl remains in serious condition with a complication that can lead to kidney failure.

The outbreak began with people who ate at a July 3 customer appreciation picnic for a lawn care business in Germantown, about 15 miles southwest of Dayton.

At least 75 people have become ill and 14 have been hospitalized.

Public health workers are working with state officials to try to trace the outbreak's source.
