Speed-only cameras are ready to go

Posted: Updated:

Toledo Police want drivers who travel the Anthony Wayne Trail to slow down. Nearly three years ago, just past the zoo, police say a car tried to avoid stopped traffic swerved across the median and slammed head on into oncoming traffic. Two children were killed. Police say speed played a role.

"Its not unusual to have people going 80-90 miles down the trail," said Toledo Police Sgt. Joe Heffernan.

That's why the city has installed two speed only cameras to clock speeders. The extra sets of eyes on the trail are between South and Hippoway near the zoo.

Councilman Rob Ludeman admits he voted to install more red light speeding camera's, but had no clue the legislation also included speed only cameras.

"I drive the trail everyday and I know how fast people can go. maybe the threat of it will slow people down make it more careful but if statistics prove true that's good but if it simple a way of enhancing revenue to the city that's not what they were intended to do," said councilman Rob Ludeman.

"I think that's insane they should have the red light and speed at the same time why should they just have the speed," said driver Cindy Dudley

"I think its a real good idea because there's a lot of speeding. I live on Tremainsville on top of it there's motorcycles cars all the time I think its a great idea," said motorist Colleen Morrissey

City leaders say statistics have proven red light cameras create safer intersections. Police say if you get caught speeding it will cost you 120 bucks.

"Oh my goodness that's a paycheck to some people Jesus Joseph and Mary what do they think some people are rich," said Dudley

The speed only camera's should be operational by next week.
