Posted: Updated:

A Sandusky man has been charged with murder in the beating death of a 3-year-old boy.

Michael Milner, 24, was watching the child Monday night when the toddler was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Police say he told them Owen Barker fell and hit his head on a toy.

Emergency crews rushed him to the hospital where he later died.  Sandusky Police say he had visible injuries to his head, neck and back.  At the time they charged Milner with child endangering.

Tuesday, the Lucas County Coroner ruled the death a homicide.  Milner is now facing additional charges of murder and felonious assault.

"He looked lifeless, you know, blue skin tone, he was limp, and I just froze," Jason Reichert, a neighbor said.

He watched as firefighters tried to save Owen.  Reichert says he didn't know Milner or his girlfriend, Owen's mom, personally.  But he said Milner never cause any trouble in the neighborhood.  But after learning of his arrest, he is in disbelief.

"I don't have any words for this.  There are no excuses," he said.  "Justice will be served."

Police say Milner was living in the home with Owen's mom, but he is not the biological father.  At this point, no charges have been filed against the mother.
