Police say argument over Television channel led to murder

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

A Toledo man is behind bars tonight charged with the murder of a man who cared for him for years. Investigators say it all started with a fight over a television station.

According to Toledo Police, 80 year old Raymond Darden was attacked by 38-year-old Julian Boyd in May. Darden died on July 4th.

Boyd was originally charged with felonious assault, but a Lucas County grand jury indicted him for the murder of Darden on Wednesday. He has been in the Lucas County Jail since the attack. Police say it all started because Boyd didn't like the TV channel his mother was watching.

Laura Beck has been a neighbor of the Darden family on Parkdale for more than a decade. She knew that Raymond Darden died, but she didn't know Boyd is now charged with his murder, "I had no idea that is why he passed away. Makes me sick to my stomach that that young man chose that path."

According to the police report, Boyd was sweating profusely and not making sense when they arrived. He told officers he was being chased by people because he was off his medications. His mother told officers Boyd was upset about the TV channel she was watching in her bedroom. She says he ripped the remote out of her hands and then punched her in the face. She told police Boyd then turned on Raymond and punched him several times in the face, knocking him off the bed.

Beck is in shock, "He was an amazing and kind man, a true gentleman. I know he's walking the streets of glory now, but that doesn't help ease the pain."

Calvin Murrell lives across the street from the Darden family, "I miss him terribly. I hate that's he's gone, he is gone too soon. He was a nice man, this world has truly lost a gentleman."

Calvin has been trying to help Mrs. Darden as she deals with this tragedy, "I do the best I can, I have been trying to make sure she is okay, I do what I can."

Court documents refer to Boyd as Darden's son, but a family member tells us Darden was not Boyd's biological father. She says Darden was his legal guardian.
