Fighting cancer with art

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

It's been a long battle with cancer for  Old West End resident Scott Lightfoot.

After finding out the disease returned for a second time, Scott Lightfoot has had difficulty keeping a job and treatments have been unsuccessful.

Scott Lightfoot is an artist. It defines him.

When he heard his cancer returned and shortly after lost his job, he saw it as an opportunity- time to concentrate on art.

Lightfoot says, "It gives me a chance to do something; I mean since I'm not working, I'm home all the time."

The art itself became therapeutic.

"I can see the completion of a project-unlike the therapy, I can't see whether the therapy is working but I can see whether I'm getting a drawing done-so it gives me a sense of accomplishment."

But he took his coping with cancer a step further, turning the focus of the artwork to the disease itself.

Lightfoot puts the cancer battle on paper.  He'll take the magnified image of the cancer cell and draw the chemical makeup of the treatment fighting it."

"I've labeled the cancer it's featuring. I got my design reduced and then information about the drug."

Lightfoot hopes his chemotherapy-themed artwork and mugs to give inspiration to others.

"Don't give up.keep family close to you and just live each day as it comes."

Friends of Scott Lightfoot are hosting the S.O.S. (Support of Scott)  fundraiser for him at the Findlay Country Club next Friday. His artwork will be available there as well as for sale on his website
