Perrysburg parent organization starting fresh.

PERRYSBURG, Ohio -

The last few months have been trying for two parent organizations in the Perrysburg school district.  In May, Kiki Lorann, a parent volunteer, was arrested, accused of stealing more than $90 thousand dollars from the Perrysburg Elementary Parents' Association, or PEPA, and the Toth Parents' Club.  But now they're looking for a fresh start.

"We're actually doing pretty well," Sherina Ohanian, PEPA president, said. "We're starting to rebuild."

They started by putting together the Going the Extra Mile fundraiser, and it was on display at the city's First Friday celebration.

"We've got families and kids just coming in so it's been really nice," Ohanian said.

And to top it off, Downtown Perrysburg Inc., a local non-profit, presented the organization with a $200 check that will likely help their bottom line.

"PEPA is very much involved with the schools and the reading programs so we chose them and it was a nice fit," Rick Thielen, VP of Downtown Perrysburg Inc said.

Thielen says he and the rest of the city is aware of the problems facing PEPA and the Toth Parent Club.  Though, every penny of the check will help, that wasn't the reason they chose the organization.

"It just so happens that there was an unfortunate situation, and if we can make it better for them that is great," Thielen said.

The hope is to raise enough money to keep hands-on activities in the classroom.
