Toledo Public School leaders say making elementary schools K-8th has been a success in the classroom and beneficial on the books.
The district has saved 3 million dollars through the transformation plan another 2 million dollars through union concessions, and another 3 million because more students chose to stay with TPS instead of getting vouchers to go to private schools.
All in all that's a 8 million dollar savings the district wants to pass along to voters.
TPS school board member Bob Vasquez tells 13 ABC, "what this shows is that we are taking steps all along...this is not something that was a total surprise and I want to make sure that people understand that...this is a result of activities that we've taken for instance concessions made by our employees."
Instead of asking for a 6.9 mill permanent levy, the district will ask for a 4.9 mill 10 year levy. It would cost the average homeowner of a 100,000 home 150.00 dollars per year. The average homeowner of a 60,000 home, 90 dollars per year.
Superintendent Dr. Jerome Pecko tells 13 ABC, "were passing that 8 million dollars worth of savings on to the constituents in our community in a reduction in the mileage that we are asking for we still need a levy unfortunately." School leaders say they hope this is just another incentive that will convince the voters to support the schools in November.
Vasquez tells 13 ABC, "we have been taking action all along to try and be good fiscal agents and take care of the money of the tax payers so this is just one more thing that is evidence. I hope they take that to heart and they know we are going to continue to do that when they support our levy."
