Who will Romney pick for VP?

Posted: Updated:

The political buzz is flashing around the announcement, who will be Mitt Romney's running mate?

Right now Romney and his closest advisors are the only ones who really know.  Reporters keep asking - and keep getting shut down.

There's even an  iPhone app designed by the Romney camp that will alert you as soon as he makes the announcement.

Mitt Romney isn't giving away his VP secret just yet.

"I will absolutely decide and announce my running mate before the third day of the Republican Convention in August but other than that I have nothing for you."

All that talk about General David Petraeus being Mitt Romney's running mate is dead after a Petraeus spokesman said he'll be staying with the CIA.

The RNC announced a list of convention headline speakers. Those people likely won't be the VP pick. We're talking about Couth Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Florida Governor Rick Scott and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee.

So, who's left?  The four names at the top of the list are Senators Rob Portman and Marco Rubio plus Congressman Paul Ryan and former governor Tim Pawlenty.

Senator Joe Lieberman says, "Obviously, you hope he chooses somebody we'll all feel is capable of being President. He'll want somebody who may help him get elected and, of course, there's a personal factor. Does he feel comfortable with the person? so, it's a really interesting moment"

Political analysts say Romney will go for someone who can bring a piece of the Republican base along with them.   He's looking for someone who could be president.   Whatever he's looking for - there's only one way to find out Romney's VP pick - hurry up and wait!

Mitt Romney kicks off a bus tour Saturday in Virginia.   He will travel to North Carolina, Florida, and of course, Ohio.  Senator Rob Portman is expected to join Romney.
