Bedford schools working it out with teachers

Posted: Updated:

Leaders in the Bedford School District say they expect to have a full contract with teachers in the next couple weeks.

The school board met Thursday in part to discuss the deal. While teachers don't have a contract yet, they did vote to approve the financial issues in the new agreement. The board voted for that, as well.

Teachers gave concessions in the contract, which will help the district meet its debt elimination plan. The superintendent says now both sides are just trying to work out some minor details.

Superintendent Ted Magrum said, "It's a very reasonable, very doable plan, not that there's not hard cuts. What we're hoping is that the economy will improve and we won't have to do all those cuts."

The superintendent says the district plans to get rid of its debt by June of 2015. There is also language in the contract that says as things improve in the district, some of the things the teachers agreed to give up will come back.
