    A local man remembers being in Oklahoma City in 1999, when a massive tornado ravaged the city.  Allan Detrich of Fremont says the area was devastated and Monday's tornado reminds him of what happened some 14 years ago.

EVENING NEWS DIGEST - AUGUST 9, 2012

NEW LOCAL NEWS

1. BEDFORD TEACHERS

The Bedford School District says it expects to have a full contract with teachers in the next couple of weeks. The school board met tonight to talk about the deal. While teachers don't have a contract yet they did approve the financial issues in the new agreement. The board approved that too. Teachers gave concessions which are expected to help the district meet its debt elimination plan. The superintendent says they just have to settle minor issues.

2. DAVIS BESSE

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission held a meeting at the Davis Besse power plant to try to reassure the community about a report on cracks in the building that houses the reactor. The NRC says investigators concluded the cracks date back to the blizzard of 1978 and don't impact safety. Some in the community aren't sure. Tonight the public got a chance to weigh in.

3. MORE SWINE FLU

The number of swine flu cases in Ohio spread from pigs to people, has jumped by more than five times. The case count went from 29 a week ago to 158 this week. That's because of a wave of new cases confirmed in Indiana and Ohio. Health officials say the flu doesn't seem to be dangerous. It appears most or all cases have spread from pigs to humans which means it's not very contagious.

4. LIMA RAPE

A 14 year old boy accused of raping a 90-year-old woman is competent to stand trial. A judge today ruled that the boy, who was 13 at the time of the rape, will be tried as a juvenile under Ohio's serious youthful offender law. That means it could one day end up in the adult system.

NEW NATIONAL NEWS

5. COLORADO SHOOTER

Attorneys for the man accused of killing 12 people in a shooting at a Colorado movie theater, say their client is mentally ill. That indicates there could be an insanity defense in the trial for James Holmes. At a hearing today, the attorneys also say they need more time to determine their client's mental status.

6. HURRICANE SEASON

This could be a busy Atlantic hurricane season. The NOAA's Climate Prediction Center says warmer than normal sea surface temperatures and wind patterns could spawn an above normal season. The forecasters say 12 to 17 tropical storms are expected. And they predict as many as five to eight hurricanes. And a few could become major hurricanes with winds of 111 mph or higher.
