The forecast was never pristine for Rounds 1 and 2 of the Jamie Farr Toledo Classic at Highland Meadows in Sylvania. In the big picture, though, things are running smoothly.
The LPGA staffs each event with an on-site meteorologist, who monitors for hazards like lightning. Thor Guard Meteorologist Kristie Kubovic has been traveling with the LPGA this summer. She said, "I'm monitoring radar, and we have equipment that detects the amount of static electricity in the air. I'll watch various models, and once I see something that could ultimately impact play, we consult with the LPGA officials."
More than an inch of rain fell on Thursday night and early Friday morning, but the timing worked out well. There were no delays in play.
Most golfers say that wind and rain make the long game more challenging, but a wet green can benefit the short game by slowing it down. We spoke with Chella Choi, atop the leaderboard at the halfway point. "We had very tough weather today. Sometimes it rained, and then the wind would change directions. When the rain came, it was very tough today."
With a large storm system crossing the Great Lakes, things could have been much worse, as little more than light rain showers fell during the hours of play, Friday.
