Press Release

38th Annual Birmingham Ethnic Festival Moves to a Two Day Event Saturday August 18th and Sunday August 19th, 20012

One of Toledo's oldest and most popular ethnic festivals, The Birmingham Ethnic Festival: A Weekend in the Old Country is now a two day event.  The festival has been held throughout the years to celebrate the strength and diversity of our community and our success in preventing the splitting of our neighborhood by a proposed road widening project thirty eight years ago.

The festival will feature popular Hungarian foods including: Chicken Paprikas, Hunky Turkey (Roasted Bacon Sandwich), Stuffed Cabbage, Kolbasz / Sausage Sandwiches, Gulyas, Palacsinta (crepes), Cabbage and Noodles, Pastries and a fantastic array of other ethnic foods on Consaul Street.

The new hours for the Festival are 12:00 to 10:00 P.M. on Saturday and 12:00 to 9:00 P.M. on Sunday.

On Saturday August 18th, at 12:30PM, a parade led by the Cake Walkin' Jass Band down Consaul Street in honor of Tony Packo's 80th Anniversary will be followed by the popular Waiters Race, starting at the corner of Consaul Street and Burger Street at 1:00 P.M.

On Sunday August 19th, a Recognition Ceremony will be held at 12:00 Noon on the steps of St. Stephen's Church, beginning with a flag raising ceremony, announcement of the recipient of the Birmingham Friend of the Neighborhood Award, recognition of local and international guests, and presentation of the Beer Keg Trophy to the winner of the Waiters Race.

Ethnic dance groups will perform both Saturday and Sunday on the three Main Stages at the St Stephen's / Hungarian club site, Calvin United and VFW4906 on Consaul Street.

The popular Craft Booths, Magyar Marketing, and the Toledo Szeged Committee will be selling their colorful and creative wares. The Birmingham Development Corporation will be promoting neighborhood involvement by recognizing homes that are winners of the "Birmingham Beauties" contest. The BDC will also be selling Birmingham's own "Honeyka" honey harvested from our community garden.  A Cultural Tent commemorating Strick's Hall / Playdium's history as well as displaying other historic items and other booths will fill out the fairway.

Come join us in celebrating a Sunday in the Old Country as well as a great Toledo neighborhood tradition with great food, music, dance….and refreshments!
