TOLEDO, Ohio -

The 3rd annual Toledo Pride event kicked off with a parade and weddings Saturday. Thousands of people showed their support for the lesbian and gay community.

Toledo Mayor Mike Bell was in attendance to show his support.

"The City of Toledo is coming around. For so long, we've been very conservative in our approach, he says. "In order to really grow as a city, we have to be a little more open to different opinions, different things inside our community, and that's why, as mayor, I think it's so important to have diversity in our community."

Toledo pride held ten wedding ceremonies for same-sex couples on Saturday. Although Ohio currently bans same-sex marriage, Ohio's wedding licenses come from Washington DC. The new couples plan to store their licenses in the nation's capitol until Ohio allows same-sex marriage.
