BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team scored twice in the first 15 minutes of the match en route to a 3-0 win over Indiana State University Saturday afternoon (Aug. 11). The scrimmage was held at Cochrane Field on the BGSU campus.
Senior Sarah VonderBrink and sophomore Sidney Huth staked the Falcons to that two-goal lead, and freshman Demy Whitaker closed the scoring midway through the second half to salt away the victory.
Both VonderBrink and Whitaker had a goal and an assist in the win, while fifth-year senior Leah Johnson had the primary assist on each of BGSU's first-half goals. Juniors Kaitlyn Tobin and Madeline Wideman each had an assist as well.
Fifth-year senior Becca Ison played the first 77 minutes in goal, making four saves, while freshman Lauren Cadel was in net for the final 13 minutes of the afternoon. Cadel did not face a shot attempt.
Indiana State had a slim 13-12 advantage in total shot attempts, while the Falcons put five shots on frame to the Sycamores' four. ISU 'keeper Erin Mitchell played all 90 minutes, making two saves.
The Falcons now have nearly a week to prepare for the regular-season opener, when Michigan State comes to Cochrane Field. That match is set for Friday night (Aug. 17) at 7:00 p.m. BGSU's three-game season-opening homestand will continue with back-to-back Sunday afternoon matches vs. Cleveland State (Aug. 19) and IUPUI (Aug. 26).
