Parking for Farr tourney helps build homes

SYLVANIA, Ohio -

Parking for a purpose and a good cause this weekend in Sylvania.  The Jamie Farr Toledo Classic has raised millions for charities over the years.

But did you know more charities benefit from the week, thanks to another group?

That group is the Sylvania United Church of Christ.  They've parked cars at the Church for 22 years.

"$5, it's been that for 22 years and will stay that way," said Jeff Crandell, with the Sylvania United Church of Christ.

They don't have the money for long.  They money actually goes to places like Feed Your Neighbors and Habitat for Humanity.  Habitat turns that money into these homes.  13 homes to be exact.

"That's what it's all about.  And it helps a lot of people," said Crandell.

"It's really fun to come out, I mean I would have done this anyway.  It's really cool to add as a bonus, this is to make a house for people.  You're out here and you may get really tired, but you're helping other people so that's fun," and parking volunteer Liz Hildebrandt.

Volunteers and church members man these lots on Farr week.  Some customers arrive at 6::00am and come back every year.

"I like the convenience and I like that the money goes to charity," said Farr spectator Deb Lishawa.

So many get in the giving spirit there, even those that don't have to.

"A lot of the volunteers that work can park some place free, convenience wise, but they also want the money to stay with the church," said Crandell.
