The Northwest Ohio Rib Off is just one event that pumped a lot of money into the local economy, and a number of different charities benefit from it. Crowds had to deal with some chilly and rainy weather the first two days, but thousands packed in this weekend for the ribs and rock and roll.
Like a lot of others, Thomas Bean, says he will be back, "I am enjoying these fantastic ribs!" So were thousands of other people this weekend. That meant some places were running low on food, like the Chicago Barbecue Company,"We ran out of almost everything, we've only got mac and cheese left." Mac and cheese is all Laurie Schultze and her family were able to sample,"Everything was sold out by the time we got over here, so I just had the mac and cheese and it was awesome."
For those who got the ribs, there was a difference of opinion about who was serving up the best barbeque, but one thing everyone agreed on is that they'll be back next year. Al Kasten is a repeat customer,"It gets better every year. I was here last night and I came back for more today."
Organizers say the weather did cut in to the turn out on Thursday and Friday, but as soon as the rain cleared out the crowds came in. Paul Myers from Chicago Barbeque says a lot of people actually seemed to enjoy the cooler temperatures,"Even on Friday with the cold and rainy weather people were just happy to see it wasn't 105 degrees."
Cliff Mortimer owns Armadillos, and he says this Rib Off is packed with great food and a lot of tradition, "We did well, but the weather on Wednesday and Thursday put a damper on our sales. if the whole event had been like it was today it obviously would have been better, but a lot of people came out this weekend and that's a good thing."
At 29 years, this is one of the oldest Rib Offs in the country. As we mentioned several charities will benefit from the Rib Off, including the Old Newsboys , the US Marine Corps League and several Maumee based charities.
