Gambling pledge for local organizations

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

Every signature is a promise to the community. Toledo's new casino has sparked interest in gambling issues and that's true with people trying to prevent gambling problems.

Local leaders are taking the Toledo pledge and are taking the initiative to educate those in their own organizations on the potential dangers of gambling.

"The more we know about the warning signs people can help people in their work place, help people in their neighborhoods and in their churches." Says Tina Skeldon-Wozniak, Lucas County Commissioner

The goal is to help people recognize the warning signs of gambling addiction and the resources available to get help.  Tina Skeldon-Wozniak says in order for pledge Toledo to work- its going to take the help of multiple organizations.

We were joined by government leaders, business leaders, representatives and law enforcement representatives. It's all about getting our community talking. There are going to be people in our community that do have a problem gambling. That can become an issue just like drug and alcohol addition. " Says Skeldon-Wozniak

Mental health experts say 2% of the local population has a gambling addiction, but experts say with the addition of the Toledo Hollywood Casino- that number could easily grow over the next few years.

We do know that the proximity to a casino will exasperate the problem in local communities. We know there's a certain number of people who need our services now, and with the location of the casino there will be the potential for that to double.
