2-year-old recovering after shooting

Posted: Updated:

Toledo police are still searching for suspects in last week's shooting that killed a one-year-old girl and badly injured her two-year-old sister. It happened late Thursday night at Moody Manor Apartments.

Keondra Hooks died at the hospital Friday. Leondra Hooks is still recovering. The family invited 13abc to see Leondra in the hospital and witness her recovery firsthand.

The bright-eyed little girl is surrounded by her family as she recuperates from a gunshot wound to her chest.

"We're going to have to explain the situation one day, but we have a long time to figure out our words," says Leondra's aunt, Bernice Neal. "I'm just glad she can breathe on her own. She's going to be walking on her own again, running around. We're going to be chasing her once again, but things are never going to be the same, ever."

Leondra's little sister, Keondra, was killed from her wound. Last week, police say two men shot inside the apartment at Moody Manor. Leondra and her baby sister were on the floor sleeping.

The senseless crime has outraged this community. Toledo police are pursuing leads, while the family urges the suspects to come forward.

Leondra's mother wants to move from Moody Manor. She doesn't want to take her daughter back.

Funeral arrangements for Leondra's sister have been made. A memorial service will be held for Keondra on Thursday at 6pm at Tate Funeral Home on Lagrange.

Meanwhile, the community is stepping up to help the family with funeral arrangements and possible medical costs.

"I would ask anyone just to please give. It doesn't matter what amount it is, just give because the family needs the help and the support of our community," says Suzette Cowell with Toledo Urban Federal Credit Union.

If you want to help, a fund has been set up at the Toledo Urban Federal Credit Union on Dorr Street.
