The Ohio Turnpike is now open to traffic after a massive early morning crash near Swanton. Early Wednesday a chain reaction crash shut down Eastbound traffic near Delta all the way to Airport Highway.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol says there were two separate crashes.
The first happened eastbound at mile marker 48. Troopers say a tractor trailer driven by Kendall Ray, 48, of Louisville, KY, struck a disabled tractor trailer. The disabled tractor trailer was pushed into a tow truck that was assisting at the scene.
The tow truck operator, Jeffrey Rogge of, 47 of Swanton, and the driver of the disabled vehicle, Willard Wheeler, 60, of Detroit were trapped between the two vehicles as they collided.
Rogge was transported to St. Vincent's Medical center and is in stable condition. Wheeler was tack en to University of Toledo Medical Center. Ray was not injured.
Thy crash slowed traffic, but troopers say another semi approached the accident too fast, slamming into another semi, which then hit another car and forced both vehicles into a nearby ditch. The driver of the semi who allegedly caused the crash, Alexander Larin is listed in stable condition at UTMC.
Cleanup crews had to remove the semis from the roadway. Both loads were scattered on the turnpike. One semi was carrying Quickset for tile work, the other a food additive, described by those on the scene as nacho cheese.
